March 2018 Newsletter, Visit from Swedish Midwives & More!

Recruitment is ongoing and numbers are now getting close to our 350 target! Great Work!
The POPPIE team leader received a certificate of appreciation granted to the preterm birth team for outstanding contributions to research. 
A group of four midwives from Barnmorskemottagningen Hjärtat and Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala (Sweden) visited the POPPIE team. This and more in March 2018 Newsletter

NIHR Award for most Innovative Collaboration

On 29th November 2017, POPPIE won the "Most Innovation Collaboration" Award as part of the maternity and women's health theme. The judge said: "This is an excellence example of collaboration with extensive set of stakeholders spanning the voluntary sector, commissioners, NHS organisations, parent and academia". 120 participants, first POPPIE baby and much more!

A total of 120 women have now been recruited and randomised to either to POPPIE care or standard care. Well done for the POPPIE midwives and maternity staff for their hard work! Midwife Sam Padain has attended the delivery of the first POPPIE baby on 17th September, Congrats! We went to the the 3rd Annual Preterm Birth Conference at Leeds and the 12th International Normal Labour and Birth conference at Grange-over-Sands. We presented the trial protocol and described the collaborative approach that we took to develop and implement the midwifery continuity of care model. Recruitment on track & POPPIE Launch

More than 80% of eligible women approached have consented trial participation, and a total of 65 women have been randomised to either midwifery continuity of care or standard care! Well done team!

And... the pilot trial commenced!


Professor Sandall (King's College London) and the CLAHRC South London research team are working with colleagues at University Hospital Lewisham, Public Health at Lewisham Council and Lewisham CCG to develop a better way of supporting women who have a higher risk of preterm birth. This randomised controlled trial will determine if a midwifery continuity of care model for these women is feasible and improves pregnancy outcomes and experiences. Regulatory  assessments have been completed, and the team started start recruitment last week!
